Michael Pappalardo is an internationally experienced choreographer, director, and arts leader known for his dynamic approach to classical and contemporary dance, as well as his work across opera and large-scale theatrical productions.
He most recently served as Artistic Director of Canyon Concert Ballet (2022–2025), where he led a period of significant growth, premiering new full-length works including Dracula, Swan Lake, 1984, and The Picture of Dorian Gray, and expanding the company’s artistic profile and reach.
Michael began his classical training in Brisbane, Queensland, before being accepted into the Queensland Dance School of Excellence. In 2002, he continued his studies at the New Zealand School of Dance, subsequently joining the Royal New Zealand Ballet, where he performed works by leading choreographers including Val Caniparoli, Jiří Kylián, Frederick Ashton, Stanton Welch, and George Balanchine.
Following his time in New Zealand, Michael returned to Australia and performed with Queensland Ballet before broadening his creative practice into design. He later returned to dance, training with Australian Dance Collective and Australian Dance Theatre, and established himself as an independent artist, collaborating with companies such as Leigh Warren and Dancers, Melbourne Ballet Company, Victoria State Ballet, and Opera Victoria.
His choreographic career gained momentum in 2011, leading to his appointment as Artistic Director of Melbourne City Ballet in 2013, and later Artistic Director/CEO in 2016. Over seven years, he transformed the company into Australia’s largest classical touring ballet organization, presenting more than 100 performances annually across Australia, New Zealand, and Japan. His works during this period received multiple award nominations.
After relocating to the United States, Michael joined San Jose Dance Theatre as Artistic Associate in 2020 and collaborated with Opera San Jose as choreographer on acclaimed productions including Dido and Aeneas and West Side Story. He has since expanded his work in opera, collaborating with Cincinnati Opera on productions including Aida (2022) and Ariodante (2023), and contributing to the staging of Liverpool Oratorio by Paul McCartney. He is also set to choreograph a new production of Fiddler on the Roof.
Michael continues to develop new works across ballet, opera, and interdisciplinary performance, with a focus on innovative storytelling and visually driven theatrical experiences.
